REVIEW
Originally built in 1852, The Clarence is one of Dublin's newest
and finest hotels and is within walking distance of all the city's
attractions. Located in Dublin's vibrant Temple Bar district - Dublin's
answer to Soho in New York and the Left Bank in Paris, The Clarence
is a symbol of the city's economic and cultural renaissance. The
hotel, which opened in June 1996 following extensive refurbishment,
is essentially the vision of Bono and The Edge from the rock band
U2, who purchased the property in 1992. The Clarence has since developed
in one of Europe's finest hotels.
Many original features have been retained in
the ground floor public areas, where wood panels and stone floors
dominate the interior but the upper floors have been totally reconstructed
behind the hotel's original façade. Each of the bedrooms,
none of which is alike, is decorated in rich colours and this
theme is carried through in the drapes, carpets, leather chairs
and upholstered headboards. Every item of furnishing has been
custom designed and primarily crafted by Irish artisans, including
the wrought-iron bedside lamps inset with hand-rolled stained
glass.
During the refurbishment, an entire floor was
added to the hotel's four original levels to allow construction
of several suites and the spectacular duplex penthouse. In addition
to two master bedroom suites, the penthouse features a living
room, dining room, full kitchen and an upstairs loft complete
with private bar, baby grand piano and outdoor hot tub on the
rooftop terrace - all offering superb views of the River Liffey
and beautiful Dublin skyline.
