Situated on a 500-acre property, which has been in the Fitzgerald
family for over 700 years, Glin Castle is one of Ireland's great
heritage houses and is owned and run by Desmond, the 29th Knight
of Glin, and Olga Fitzgerald. Surrounded by sweeping parkland, Glin
Castle, much like Humewood Castle in Wicklow, is one of the most
unique places to stay in Ireland. The property retains the atmosphere
of an historic castle and houses a famous collection of antique
Irish furniture and paintings.
Built originally for entertaining in the true
Irish hospitable tradition, the castle has been sympathetically
adapted to offer the comfort, modern amenities and professional
service required by today's sophisticated traveler. The castle's
many works of art are displayed in a series of reception rooms,
while the library has a superb mahogany bookcase artfully concealing
a door, which leads through to the hall with a unique flying staircase.
The bedrooms exude either a plush cosiness
or an airy elegance, while each one is exceptionally comfortable
and furnished with period pieces as well as a varied collection
of Irish prints and drawings. Hung with portraits and adorned
with porcelain, the magnificent drawing room at Glin Castle acts
as a quiet, graceful retreat and is the perfect venue for pre-dinner
drinks. The castle is surrounded by manicured formal gardens with
clipped hedges, stone urns and busts. The gardens include a beautiful
walled garden, which supplies the kitchen with fresh fruit and
vegetables and a lost Victorian garden, which houses a Gothic
hermitage.
