ACCOMMODATION
REVIEW
Located on the majestic shores of Lough Ree, just a few miles northeast
of Athlone Town, the Hodson Bay Hotel is one of the finest three-star
hotels in the country and has benefited hugely from an extensive
recent refurbishment scheme. The hotel offers its guests an abundance
of facilities and is a real haven for the golfer, with numerous
parkland gems in the vicinity.
One of the many highlights of the idyllically
situated Hodson Bay Hotel is the exquisitely beautiful panorama
that it commands. This too is one of the most striking features
of the guestrooms at Hodson Bay, with many of them offering incomparable
views of Lough Ree through large purpose-built windows. The hotel
offers fine conference facilities and a superb range of leisure
facilities, from indoor heated swimming pool and sauna to aromatherapy
and massage. Guests have a choice of dining within the hotel and
may choose between the award-winning L'Escale Restaurant, which
specialises in seafood, and the recently refurbished New Garden
Restaurant. The Waterfront Bar meanwhile, is the perfect place
to relax over a pint.
Given the opportunity, guests should visit
Athlone Castle, which features a stimulating exhibition on "the
Siege of Athlone" and recalls the life of world-renowned
tenor, Count John McCormack. Clonmacnoise, the 6th century monastic
settlement founded by St. Kevin, is another recommended visit,
while visitors will be fascinated with Locke's Vintage Museum,
where you have the opportunity to sample some of the produce from
what is believed to be oldest licensed pot still distillery in
the world.
