Set at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains in an imperious 500-acre
walled country estate, Humewood Castle is a living, breathing owner
occupied castle with all the intricacies and eccentricities of a
beautiful 19th century home. The property was commissioned by William
Wentworth Fitzwilliam Dick (the Right Honourable Hume Dick), designed
by internationally acclaimed architect William White and built by
Albert Kimberly between 1867 and 1870.
While Hume Dick had "an occasional resort
in the summer or shooting season" in mind when he commissioned
the structure, White continued to expand upon his original designs
and overran his budgeted expenditure of £15,000 by £10,000.
The refusal to pay the difference to the builder resulted in one
of the most famous architectural law cases ever, which the builder
won, thus ruining the career of White - a sad end to the architect
of this stunning oasis.
Today, Humewood Castle stands as a Victorian
hybrid - a Scottish baronial hall with certain Irish peculiarities
in the battlement detail, which combine to dramatic effect. Its
asymmetry and spectacular mass of granite, punctuated by soaring
battlements and pointed towers, ascend gradually to an oblong
tower over 100 feet in height. The hospitality and service at
Humewood is second to none, while the excellent cuisine is complimented
by an extensive wine cellar. The bedrooms are straight from the
19th century and are quite beyond belief, while guests may choose
from the elegance of the Empire Suite, the period splendour of
the Napoleonic bedroom or the strikingly beautiful Dynasty Suite.
Your stay at Humewood will be unforgettable.
