REVIEW
A country mansion of old-world elegance, historic Newport House
was home for over 200 years to the O'Donnell clan, direct descendants
of the fighting Earls of Tyrconnell and cousins of the famous Irish
historical figure, 'Red Hugh O'Donnell'. The names of the fighting
O'Donnell family are to be found on the Army Rolls of Europe and
America, while the last heir of this branch, Captain George Frederick
Thomas O'Donnell, was killed during World War One at Ypres in 1915.
This small adjoining town of Newport rests
between Achill Island and the mountains of Mayo, close to the
wild and un-spoilt splendors of Erris and Connemara. The main
hall of Newport House, with its graceful staircase surmounted
by lantern and dome is an outstanding feature of the house. Other
exquisite features include the drawing room, Regency style mirrors,
chandelier and impressive windows, which look out onto the garden
and park. Each of the bedrooms offer individuality, comfort and
the full range of modern amenities. Twelve are located in the
main house, while the remaining eight are located near the courtyard.
Situated alongside the Newport River, where
it flows into Clew Bay and within reach of some of Ireland's most
beautiful lakes, mountains, streams and moorland, Newport House
is a perfect base for enjoying the golfing, fishing and touring
delights of the region. Achill Island, Ireland's largest island
situated a short distance from the hotel, is well worth a visit.
Connected by bridge to the mainland, Achill encompasses dramatic
land and seascapes and has provided valuable inspiration for countless
artists and writers over the years. There are many archaeological
and historical sites on the island including the famous deserted
village at Slievemore and Kildamhnait Castle associated with Pirate
Queen, Grace O'Malley.
