REVIEW
Nestling at the foot of the heather-clad Caha Mountains on the banks
of the River Sheen, Sheen Falls Lodge represents a magnificent oasis
of tranquility just outside Kenmare. Set on a private 300-acre wooded
estate, Sheen Falls was originally an 18th century fishing lodge.
Purchased in 1988, the property underwent an extensive restoration
programme. Today, Sheen Falls is regarded as one of Ireland's very
best hotels and was recently rated among the best in Europe by Condé
Naste Traveler.
Guests can relax in the spacious lounges where
log fires blaze or relax in the library where over 1,000 volumes
of classic and modern literature are available. The bedrooms,
which offer spectacular views of the waterfall or bay, are particularly
spacious and well appointed and are typified by a mélange
of pale woods, rich fabrics and expensive marble bathrooms. Guests
are free to roam the hotel's gardens and woodland and enjoy the
breathtaking scenery of the Kenmare region.
When not golfing, dining or simply relaxing
in incomparable luxury, the hotel offers a plethora of activities
to preoccupy the mind. Pony trekking, salmon and trout fishing
on the River Sheen, clay pigeon shooting, floodlit tennis and
a fully equipped health and fitness centre are among the many
excellent facilities on offer here. Situated just a mile from
Kenmare, Sheen Falls is the perfect base for touring the world-famous
Ring of Kerry. Visitors can also sample Kenmare's lace making
traditions, a practice that is demonstrated in Kenmare's Heritage
Centre.
