REVIEW
A hotel with a long and distinguished history, the Slieve Donard
celebrated its centenary as a hotel in 1997. Located at the foot
of the scenic Mountains of Mourne, which have been immortalised
in verse by Percy French, the Slieve Donard Hotel stands on 6 acres
of private grounds directly beside the world-renowned Royal County
Down golf links. Lying on the shores of Newcastle Bay, the thriving
town of Newcastle is only a short walk away.
Throughout the years the Slieve Donard Hotel
has earned a reputation as one of Northern Ireland's most popular
hotels and today, following a complete refurbishment, this position
has been reinforced. Guests may relax in the hotel's oak paneled
drawing room, with its fabulous central fireplace or enjoy a drink
in Chaplins Bar, named after the famous comedian who visited the
hotel in 1921. Each guestroom has been tastefully furnished, with
many offering magnificent views of the Mourne Mountains, Royal
County Down and the sweeping strands of Newcastle Bay. The Elysium
Leisure Complex meanwhile, offers a wide range of facilities,
which will keep both body and mind well tuned.
Outside the hotel, take the opportunity to
discover the country pubs tucked amid mountain villages, explore
the dense woodlands, view stately homes or try your hand at fishing,
horse riding or sailing. There are a number of must see sites
in the area including Silent Valley, a magnificent reservoir cradled
in the Mourne Mountains and Castlewellan Forest Park, with its
miles of wooded walks.
