REVIEW
Uniquely located on a wooded tidal island and connected to the mainland
by a causeway, St. Ernans House Hotel offers the perfect respite
from the hectic pace of everyday life. An oasis of peace and tranquility,
St. Ernans was built by John Hamilton in 1826, a young landowner
noted for his practical concern towards his tenants. Situated about
a mile from the town of Donegal, St. Ernans today represents an
unspoiled country hideaway, untouched by the rigours city-living.
Situated in amazingly scenic countryside almost
in the midst of Donegal Bay, the crackle of a real log fire, the
moments spent lost in a book in the quiet of the drawing room,
the music of a songbird through an open window and the luxury
of a deep, untroubled sleep in a luxurious bed, await your visit
to St. Ernans. Each of the 12 guestrooms are exquisitely appointed,
each offering its own unique charm and most offering breathtaking
views of the sea and countryside.
The area around Donegal is one of the most
scenically beautiful in Ireland and there are many activities
and interesting places to visit in the region. Donegal was the
seat of the powerful O'Donnell clan and their castle still dominates
the local landscape. Guests are recommend to visit Castle Coole,
a magnificent neo-classical house built in the 1830's and family
home of the Earls of Belmore. It has remarkable furnishings and
paintings from the era. Belleek Pottery, the world famous pottery
manufacturer, offers guided tours, while demonstrations are ongoing
in the visitor centre.
