Acccommodation:
For the duration of your
holiday you will be based in a comfortable Irish Tourist
Board approved country house in Westport, Co. Mayo,
which has a drying room and map room. |

This
tour of 5 days relaxed walking up to 8 miles (12
km) daily. From our base in Westport, you will be
taken in a different direction each day to ramble
and explore quiet country lanes, bog roads and coastal
paths. An ideal break for those who like walking
without too much effort. Westport nestling in the
shadow of Croagh Patrick, and overlooking Clew Bay
and its enchanting islands, the town weaves its
spell around everyone who visits. |

Your
Walking Tour Itinerary: |

Day 1: Arrival
Optional pick up at Westport
train station. Dinner and briefing with your guide
at 17:00hrs |
Day 2: The Western Way - Connemara
to Mam Ean. - Distance:
9 miles/900ft
We begin with a coach transfer of appoximately 50
minutes to Connemara where we walk on a bog track
to Man Ean where we come to a holy well, small chapel
and a set of stations of the cross. |
Day 3: The Western Way - Inagh
Valley to Leenane - Distance:
9 miles/900ft
Today's walk is still on the western way and we finish
in the village of Leenane made famous as the the location
for the movie The Field. Leenane village is reported
to have the smallest population of any village in
Ireland. It is the cross roads of Connemara. Leenane
Cultural Centre is also well worth a visit. |
Day 4:
Killary Harbour Coastal Walk. - Distance:
6 miles/low level descent
We begin the day with a visit to Kylemore Abbey and
then drive to the head of Ireland's only fiord and
begin with our walk on an old famine road that was
built by the starving Irish in the 1840's. |
Day 5: Free Day.
Today you have the choice
of just relaxing and discovering the lovely cultural
town of Westport. There are some wonderful craft shops,
pottery, art, galleries and book shops. Other options
are: Play golf in Westport, deep see fishing or cycling. |
Day 6: Walk on the Shoulder
of Croagh Patrick. - Distance:
7 miles - Ascent: 1,600 ft.
Today we visit Ireland's national famine monument,
walk the pilgrim path to the 1st station on Croagh
Patrick, then take the southern route to pick up the
Mayo section of the western way back to base. |
Day 7: Walk on Clare Island
- Distance: 8 miles
A short sailing to Clare Island, which is synonymous
with Grace O'Malley the formidable ruler of The Clew
Bay district during the second half of the 16th century.
The walk takes us to the northernmost end of the island
before returning to the quayside for our return ferry. |
