Urquhart Castle

Urquhart Castle is a ruin that is located next to Loch Ness on the Highlands of Scotland. The castle is 21 km south-west of Inverness. The castle that stands today dates between the 13th and 16th centuries. The castle was founded in the 13th century and Urquhart played a role in the War of Scottish Independence in the 14th century. Your visit will allow you to discover history that is over 1000 years old. It was once one of Scotland’s largest castles and during its 500 years as a medieval fortress it saw lots of conflict. During the War of Independence the control of the castle passed back and forth several times between the Scottish and English. In the period of the Jacobite Risings the government troops blew up the castle to the remains that sits today. There are lots of things to see and do, as you soak up the scenery of Loch Ness, one of Scotland’s most famous lochs. Imagine what it was like as a castle with its banquets in the Great Hall.
